Help Tyler in His Battle With Hodgkin's Lymphoma

The Back Story
Tyler Schultz is a young man with a world of possibility in front of him. But now Tyler is fighting Hodgkins Lymphoma.  The son of Becky and Randy Schultz, Tyler is both an active coffee specialist and music enthusiast with interests in soccer, surfing, fishing, and travel.

Tyler attended Seattle Pacific University receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Music. He played soccer on the SPU Men’s team and was awarded academic and athletic All American Honors.  His senior year Tyler was named the SPU Athlete of the Year. After college Tyler broke into the coffee industry working in production at a local roaster in Seattle, educating others about the many joys of coffee.

Tyler and his partner Mandy left their Seattle community and jobs moving to Hawaii in 2016.  There Tyler started working for a “Seed To Cup” operation on Maui where he was growing, processing and roasting coffee on the property.  Mandy was a nurse in the emergency room at Maui Memorial.

Life Interrupted
Towards the latter part of their journey on Maui, Tyler began experiencing shortness of breath, increased asthma episodes, chest pain, night sweats, and new allergies.

In early July, Mandy and Tyler left Maui with plans to travel through Europe for three months after visiting family on the mainland. Days before their scheduled trip to Barcelona, they went to see a doctor in Wisconsin where they decided to get a chest X-ray for some viral symptoms Tyler had been experiencing. A large mediastinal mass was discovered in his chest and he was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Mandy had worked in a specialized cancer unit in Seattle and was far too familiar with what was soon to be their new path. They cancelled their reservations in Europe and moved to Phoenix to begin treatment at Mayo Clinic.

At the Mayo Clinic, Tyler’s oncologist Dr. Allison Rosenthal, specializes in adolescence and young adults with blood cancers. She has outlined a treatment plan for Tyler that begins with 6 months of chemotherapy. While we can never predict the exact course of treatment, Dr. Rosenthal believes that 12 doses of chemotherapy is a good place to begin (and hopefully end). Over the course of treatment he will experience many of the side effects caused by chemotherapy. These include nausea, fatigue, and being confined to the house for about a week after each dose. Tyler works a part time job online but is otherwise unable to be employed due to his risk for infection and side effects from the chemotherapy.

All Monies Go Toward Medical Bills
Transitioning back to the mainland has meant changing jobs and with this, an impact on the ability to find substantial health insurance to cover his healthcare needs.  All funds raised will be used to assist in medical bills in order to ensure Tyler is given the chance to reach his potential. If there are any remaining funds, they will be donated to both the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and the Dear Jack Foundation.

Our Connections and Why We Are Engaged
His mother, Becky Schultz is a retired school counselor, and part of the Deer Valley Unified School District family. Becky provided crisis care to everybody experiencing loss or trauma in the Deer Valley Unified School District for many years.  It is the part of the Deer Valley family that is reaching out to you to provide whatever help you can and will be sponsoring additional fundraising events in order to give back the care Becky provided for years to our family.
