The Swedish Academy of Realistic Art (SARA) is one of the few schools in the world providing unique vocational education in the field of classical painting, a skill that can be used both as a fine artist, but also in other professions such as, among others, computer games, illustration, and the film industry. The school is internationally recognised, with students attending from all over the world, and is an important complement and alternative to state supported art colleges.
SARA was active in Stockholm for 9 years before moving, in the summer of 2015, into the beautiful old Västra Park school building in Simrishamn. It is an ideal location for the school, now and into the future. Ever since we moved here, our goal has been to purchase the building and thereby establish it as a permanent home for our academy. Our current rental contract expires in June 2018, after which the property will be sold. We welcome the sale, since we really want to buy the building and restore it to its former glory. However, the sale comes a bit earlier than is ideal for us, financially. Therefore, we need to raise the necessary funds by the end of January 2018.
The property is today in extreme need of renovation. The entire facade needs to be restored, and windows and doors need to be replaced or repaired, etc. Inside, we have already started the process of creating a space that offers beauty, joy and inspiration to everyone who enters, which is something we look forward to continuing to do throughout the building for future generations of students and visitors. So far, we have added a mural painting to the kitchen, restored one of the original wooden floors in one of the largest rooms, and repainted, reorganised, and redecorated many rooms to create our magical atmosphere.
The main building, built in 1874, is designed according to Beaux Arts architecture that combines classical ideals for modern purposes and was designed by the architect Helgo Zettervall, who also designed Lund University's main building in 1877. Since 1994, the building has been classified by the city of Simrishamn as an important building with great cultural and architectural value.
To create this cultural gem of a school and secure the building as our future home, we need your help. Any donation is welcome! We currently do not have the possibility to pay for the building and renovations, as the school does not receive government grants and is entirely funded through student tuition fees. Even though we are experiencing a steady increase in the number of students, we have not yet reached the number of students we had before the move, which has put us in a financially challenging position in regards to the building.
SARA has many exciting projects in progress. Amongst others, we have started collaborating with the University of Wisconsin in the United States, in the area of Gamification. This reinforces SARA's position as one of the few schools in the world that provides this type of education, and the value that it has internationally.
SARA also has an ongoing collaboration with Ystad's theatre, as well as Kammaropera Syd, with its artistic director, Rickard Söderberg and Laine Quist, to create new stage scenery in the same spirit as a few originals they possess from 1894. Ystad Teater is one of only 5 theatres in the world to have preserved its original, functioning stage machinery.
