Support the Carlow family

Over the past seventeen years the Carlow family has adopted thirteen children with varying disabilities. Although they were aware that the children had special needs when they were adopting them they could not have been prepared for the challenges they have been facing this past year.

Over the past year two of the adoptive children started regressing in their therapies and one started tremor to the point that she was unable to feed herself. Their parents became concerned and brought them to the specialist that have been following the children since their adoption. The results found that there is a problem with their cerebellums. Their cerebellum is too small and is not growing as they get older. The specialist concluded that the two children and most likely their three biological siblings would continue to regress with time until they become wheelchair bound. The parents were told to take palliative measures with the children and to make sure they were comfortable as it is unclear what their future would look like.

If this was not challenging enough their biological adult son started to have health problems as the same time. He has been to doctor after doctor trying to figure out a diagnosis. After two years of doctor appointments while continuing to get worse they have determined that he has a neurological degenerative disorder. Although they do not have a firm diagnosis they are thinking it may be ALS or Parkinson's disease. Their son is thinking he may have to move in with them in the near future.

With all of this going on the family has the struggle of adapting their house to fit the needs of their children. It is likely that many of the children will need to be in a wheelchair full time and they need their house to accommodate that. They will also need equipment such as hospital beds, mechanical lifts, suction machines, etc.
