#StayHomeAndSing - Support Pittsburgh Youth Chorus

Tax deductible
OUR “WHY”: Pittsburgh Youth Chorus (PYC) is creating space for young people of different backgrounds to come together and create something beautiful with one another.

Each season, we work with approximately 170 young people in our year-long programs which continue to expand. For decades, we’ve offered student singers unique opportunities to perform with organizations like Pittsburgh Opera and Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. With a passion for creating intercultural space through music, next season we will continue to widen our music-making circles and produce several of our own events celebrating Black cultural traditions.

In October, we plan to bring Dr. Raymond Wise, gospel music specialist and professor of music at Indiana University, to Ebenezer Baptist Church in the Hill District for three days to work with the singers of PYC and other youth choral organizations.

In spring 2021, we plan to stage the first ever youth production of "Crossings", a multidisciplinary semi-theatrical work by composer Ysaÿe Barnwell  and choreographer/writer/filmmaker David Roussève. For this production, PYC will be joined by Hill Dance Academy Theatre in an intentional partnership meant to examine how race impacts the way we relate to one another.

OUR CHALLENGE: Although we have been knocked off balance by the drastic changes that COVID-19 has caused in our “normal” day-to-day lives – and the financial consequences – we truly believe in the importance of this work. The most difficult aspect to social distancing for PYC has been the inability to get together as a choir to sing, rehearse, perform, and share music with each other and our friends and families. However, to make matters worse, PYC (like many other businesses and organizations) has suffered a financial hit due to lost ticket revenue and performance opportunities.

OUR RESPONSE: We have continued meeting with our singers in virtual space, singing for each other and sharing stories and laughter. We are proud of the singers and their families for being so resilient under these circumstances, and every comment shared with us has been about how nice it is to still connect in this way.

Furthermore, PYC has put together our first Virtual Choir video. Even if you don’t donate, you should check it out. This crisis has given us the impetus to venture into new territory for our organization. We discovered a hidden gem in this project, and we are already planning for more!

We are looking for a vote of confidence from our community to support our ongoing work with Pittsburgh’s young people. We've set a goal of raising just 15% of the revenue loss we anticipate with our cancelled performances. Please consider making a contribution of $5 or $10 dollars so we can ensure that our program for next season stays in place.
