Support for Eddy in the NICU

Donation protected
Eddy was born February 2, 2017 at Beth Israel hospital in Boston. Due to being born via cesarean, Eddy had some fluid in his lungs that needed to be cleared. He was admitted to the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) at Beth Israel immediately after birth. We were told he would only need to stay in the NICU a few hours, a day at most to clear the fluid in his lungs. He was put on continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) to help him clear the fluid.

Unfortunately, the CPAP pressure was too much for him and air began to leak out of his lungs, causing them to collapse (this is called a pneumothorax, a possible complication of being on CPAP). The excellent medical team at Beth Israel was able to stabilize Eddy by placing a chest tube on each side. For his first week of life he had to be on a ventilator to breathe, an IV, and was given strong pain medication as the chest tubes are quite painful.

Eddy has been making great progress in his recovery, but it will still take some time. After a week he was breathing on his own and the chest tubes were taken out, along with the ventilator. He began to receive breast milk through a feeding tube in his nose and no longer needed pain medication or sedation.

After two weeks he is making progress everyday learning how to breastfeed and take a bottle. He has been through a lot and it's a slow healing process, so the doctors still don't know when Eddy will be able to leave the hospital and come home with his Mom, Dad, and sister Lily.

Thank You for your well wishes and support. We will be posting updates on Eddy's progress here.
