I hope this this finds you well.
Beginning Sunday, June 26th, 2016 at 9:00 a.m., I will race in the Handcycling Heat of the Central Park Hope and Possibility Race. I am aiming to raise $20,000 in my first handcycling race to offset the medical and equipment costs incurred as a result of my skydiving accident in July 2014. I continue to fight to regain a high quality of life and everyday is miraculous and challenging. Handcycling is totally new to me and has become therapy, a humbler, allowed me to rebuild my body, and encouraged me to push pass/past my limitations. Imagine pushing a vehicle with only your arms and carrying your weight over and down hills for miles.
It is an outlet to improve my health and increase my chances in recovery. It's also a distraction and a challenge simultaneously.
As a former competitor who is used to being on the basketball court or the field or academic space, I have shifted my energy to adapt and build my confidence in a new way. Past pain, sickness, doubt and challenge, I move without guarantee but fearlessly into power. Cycling makes me nervous and ambitious and that's why I love it. Cycling is a grueling activity that I oftentimes fail at, but it is forgiving and I keep trying. In an effort to counteract atrophy and a sedentary lifestyle this is a step in my new journey.
Whether you are in NYC at the race, cheering me on from afar, online or following by live camera, I need your support! I will race at least 3 times a year. I will build my team and motivate others to participate as well. Your donation means a great deal and supports my efforts and dedication to continuously improve.
