Summer Research in Ecuador

Donation protected
Hi everyone! My name is Marilyn Rocco and I am currently a senior at UNC-Wilmington. I am studying biology with the hopes of becoming a veterinarian one day. I have created this page because of the wonderful opportunity I have come across. Between May 22nd and June 5th, my university is offering a faulty-led trip to Quito, Ecuador where I would be able to fulfill my field-research credits. This trip, emphasizing the importance of terrestrial, Neotropical ecosystems, will provide me with an introduction to the structure, function, and biological diversity of this beautiful country.

This course is focused on a two-week, hand-on experience in the lower montane rainforest at the new Wildsumaco Biological Station (a partnership between UNCW and Francis Marion University) on the slope of the Sumaco Volcano. This area is one of the most biodiverse areas on the planet and I believe it is the perfect way to incorporate my knowledge into the research project in the natural laboratory.

Traveling has always been a passion of mine because it gives me the ability to immerse myself in the multiple cultures that make up our world. It really does give us the opportunity to connect with other people in a way not possible otherwise. Any donation matters, as I am trying to fund this without the help of my parents--they have already given me enough.

The trip is about $1500, not including the flights. I know that a lot of people are against asking for "handouts" and won't support this, but I am also working and planning other fundraisers to help raise this money. Therefore, I am grateful for everything!
