Suicide Prevention In Nepal

World Health Organisation has set a goal to cut national suicide rate by 10% by 2020. The organisation believes suicide is a major but preventable health problem that health authorities had failed to adequately address due to a number of complicated factors. In Nepal, not many organisations are active in working on this issue. Even the organisations, which are active in working on this issue, have talked very few about it. 

Out of the mist has emerged, one organisation, named, The School ofPsychology Nepal, which has made huge effort raising awareness in this very important issue in Nepal. From early days of its establishment, in 2011, The School of Psychology has conducted different programme related to psychological issues. The organisation has brought this issue in a mainstream, conveying the message that “Suicide is Preventable”. It has launched its facilitation training with the title “Suicide Prevention Facilitation Training”. The two days training aims to the aware participant and prepares them to raise awareness in their community. As many as 512 people are trained to date in altogether 57districts throughout Nepal. Among 26 Suicide Prevention  Facilitation Training, 18 of them were  organised in Kathmandu, and one each in  Illam, Morang, Kavre, Nawalparasi, Surkhet districts. Without the external fund and donations, the organisation has invested about Rs 8 million in training materials and manpower throughout 19 districts.

According to Dr.Narendra Thagunna, the President of The School of Psychology Nepal, each  trained participants are assigned the task to conduct orientation session of atleast two hours in five places in their community to raise the awareness. The participants has volunteered in this programme according to the aim, of  the organisation which has brought outstanding result. In 19 districts of Nepal, around 14,282 people are made  aware in  149 different orietation  events.
The organisation has planned launching the programme in all 75 districts of Nepal.

10th September is on its way, which marks the World Suicide Prevention Day. The School Of Psychology Nepal, is planning to conduct different programmes to impart awareness about this important issue . We request every responsible individual, firms, and institution to join in hand with the programme this organisation is implementing to save the life and soul of the people who are in another queue in making suicidal plan.
