Hello, My name is Fiona Mawusi Akilo Stawarz. I am a 17 yr old biracial Nigerian American girl from Maine who lives with Type I Diabetes and I’m reaching out to you because I need your help. I live in a single income home with my mom, who is a social worker in a school. I have a super amazing opportunity to do a World Government study abroad program in Brussels, Belgium - Home to NATO and the center for the EU! The problem is that the program is more than my mom and I can afford. That is why I am reaching out for help.
CIEE generously provided some assistance but we need to pay the remainder of $2675, plus airfare of $600-$800, passport fees around $145, and the suggested amount of spending money $500. That is a total of about $4000 which is more than we can do ourselves.
This trip blends my biggest passions of travel and politics/law/government!! I'm so excited about it that I've hardly slept since getting the acceptance...and worrying about how I will get the money to fund this dream.
My goal is to become a Lawyer and Politician and someday give back to my community as effectively as possible. I strive to contribute to the present while also getting my education. I am involved in the following:
*I have a 4.0 GPA at South Portland High School - Go Red Riots!!
*I do varsity volleyball, indoor track & outdoor track.
*I am Vice President of my Class.
*I am one of two school board representatives for SPHS.
*I do an Internship with Mrs. LeForge the Principal to increase student involvement.
*I participate in the Culture Club & am very active in Diversity Activities in our school.
*I am a proud member of the Seeds Of Peace Program & attended the Seeds of Peace Camp, Summer 2019.
*I participate in the Telling Room Young Writers & Leaders Program.
*I volunteer at the S. Portland Boys & Girls Club.
*I did an Internship at Maine Initiatives, Summer 2019.
*I attended the HOBY Leadership Program, June 2019.
*I attended RYLA Leadership Program, Summer 2019.
I am so passionate about what this program has to offer. I am a hard worker and I will use what I learn to the fullest. Without your help, I will miss out on this fabulous, once in a lifetime opportunity.
