My name is Nathan Matthews and I am a Criminal Justice major at Baldwin Wallace University. I grew up in Marietta, OH and graduated Marietta High School. I am raising this money for my study abroad trip to Germany in May of 2020. It is an educational trip through my university and is focused around intercultural communications. This is the study of communication across different cultures and social groups.
The trip: This will be roughly 3-4 week trip and we will be staying in Berlin, Munich, and surrounding cities. We will stay mostly in hostiles and a week at the German School of Language. The trip cost includes airfare, housing, some meals, and transportation. Most of my time spent in Germany will be learning in classroom settings, touring historical areas, and applying what I have learned. This trip will also give me many credits for my university that are needed in different areas to graduate. I will have to take a required Intercultural Communication class and a mini-semester class of German language.
Background: My freshman year at Marietta High School, I hosted an exchange student from Germany, Sami Bakroun, for a year. As an only child, I bonded with him and he became my lifelong brother. A year later, he came back and visited me and my family. For my graduation present, my parents and I traveled to Germany and visited him and his family! We stayed with them for 10 days and it was the best experience I could have ever asked for. While I am there, I will be able to go visit him and his family on some of my free days!
I learned a lot from that trip, and I am extremely excited to return to Germany to further my learning. Growing up in Marietta, I saw how much this community cares about each other and how much the city and school prides itself on recent graduates success. Any amount is greatly appreciated and I am extremely thankful to be given this opportunity!
