Sometimes bad things happen to good people. Carmen (the lovely lady pictured here) and I are like cousins; our mothers are best friends. She's an amazing, hardworking, loving single mother of two young boys with special needs. And she needs our help.  Badly.

Her landlords have informed her that eviction is coming

Friends, it's the middle of winter. Right now, she literally has $400 to her name. She is terrified.

Carmen has fallen on really hard times. She has a part-time minimum wage job at a local donut shop. It just doesn't cover the expenses.

She has been actively looking for a second job (and I and some other folks are helping her with that search), but nothing has come through yet.  She has her high school diploma and some experience, but the job market hasn't been friendly to her.

Her sweet boys have multiple health needs that require lots of attention, and she herself has to wear leg braces right now due to an acute flareup of tendonitis. She is in severe pain. But she is such a trooper and doesn't complain at all and does her best at the job she's got.

The bottom line?

Carmen and her kids are facing eviction if she cannot make rent in full. It is due on January 1st. That is five days away, as I write this. Rent is $975 per month, and she’s two months behind as it is. She is also more than $500 behind in utilities, with more stacking up each month. And they need to eat. As I estimate it, Carmen needs $3,500 to get current and stay in her home, keep the lights on, and feed her family while she finds a job that can support them.

Carmen spent an enormous amount of time and all her money fighting a legal battle to win custody of her boys and keep them in a safe, loving environment. Keeping her family warm and TOGETHER is her first priority and I know that she is heartbroken and fearful that this will compromise that.

I offered to put this campaign together for her because I believe that there are some things that people will just not let happen, like children out on the street in a harsh New England winter. I believe that we live in a country where people pull together, help each other out, bring over a casserole. A country where anyone and everyone is a neighbor. Where we take care of each other.

Dear friends, if you can, would you contribute? If she can get out of this hole, back on her feet, and into the job she deserves, Carmen is going to soar. Anything you can give. It will mean everything to me, Carmen, our families, and her boys. Thank you so much.
