St. Joseph Chapel - within the Roman Catholic Diocese of Boise- is located near the small town of Spirit Lake in north Idaho. It serves the spiritual needs of a largely blue collar rural community within a 15 mile radius where approximately 50% of the local school students qualify for free or reduced price lunches.
The chapel was built in 1966 on donated land and with the help of a grant from Catholic Extension and volunteer labor. The building has only a sanctuary and a small kitchen and bathroom space. Mass is offered 3 times per week with the help of a priest shared with another chapel in the Diocese.
Pictured above is Mary Ealy who was the bride at the first wedding in the chapel 50 years ago with a past Parochial Vicar- Father Bruno Mgaya.
Without a church hall there are no classrooms for faith education nor Bible study, no space for meetings, charity meals, wedding receptions, funerals, youth events or other faith-based activities.
The congregation has been trying for 15 years to raise enough money for a hall by raffles, bake sales outside the church in good weather, sausage/hot dog stands at the city park, etc. and by monthly donations from some members, because there is no place for fundraising events such as dinners, etc.
Thus far a septic system large enough for both the church and the hall has been installed and an 8" water line required by the fire marshall was brought to the site. Already about $35,000 had to be spent on those. Plans are on paper but the building fund needs to be increased before construction can begin and we need your help.
No donation amount is too small. If many people donate a little, this project could be realized- "one body in Christ" expanded. Your face-book and email friends can help too by spreading the word.
