Steve Sarault (aka “Salty Fresh” or “The Professor”) is a Senior at UMASS Amherst. On Sunday, March 26th, about a month and a half prior to his graduation, Steve woke up and was having hard time breathing, walking and talking. Steve’s roommate called 911 and Steve ended up being emergently admitted to Bay State Medical Center in Springfield, MA. We originally thought Steve had a bad case of the flu or Mono, but after some testing Steve was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre Syndrome. Guillain-Barre Syndrome or “GBS” is a condition in which the immune system attacks the nerves and can vary in severity. "GBS" is very rare and there are fewer than 20,000 cases per year in the US.

Unfortunately, Steve’s case has been extremely severe requiring him to be put on a ventilator. He has been unable to move most of his body and has been hospitalized ever since. Steve was eventually transferred to Mass. General Hospital for a few weeks and is now at Spaulding Hospital in Cambridge. Steve’s progress has been slow but steady. He’s able to communicate with a laser pointer on his eyeglasses (which he probably thinks is really cool) and is moving his extremities slightly.

It has been a long road for Steve and his family and there is still a ways to go. We all want to see the Professor back to his old self, but he is going to have to spend some more time in rehab working to get stronger. He will then most likely have to continue rehabilitation at home.

Steve’s mother has been by his side since the beginning taking time off from work to be with and care for him. We anticipate Steve’s medical costs to continue to accumulate and there may be some unanticipated expenses that arise, especially as his care continues at home.

Many of Steve’s friends and family have been asking how they can help so we have decided to set up this GoFundMe page. The funds raised will help with some of Steve’s out of pocket medical expenses. Please consider donating to help Steve’s cause.

Hello all its me Stephen I'd like to start off by thanking everyone for their support. I'm doing much better now and I am currently continuing physical therapy to increase my strength. I can walk on my own and recently finished up my degree. I couldn't have done it without all of your support!

I just wanted to share a quick update on Steve. He is improving a bit each day. We are encouraged by his progress and impressed by his hard work. He is talking when off the ventilator (which is about 14 hrs per day) moving a bit and showing more signs of improvement daily.

He has seen all of the support and well wishes from each of you and expressed extreme gratitude. He is determined to get back to his old self and we know he will with some more hard work and determination.

Steve will be at Spaulding in Cambridge for a few more weeks, provided all goes well, and then graduate to Spaulding Rehab in Charlestown for some more intensive physical rehab.

Steve still has a ways to go, but we know with all of the love and support he is receiving, and the determination he is committing to his recovery he'll get back to being Salty Fresh. Thanks. #Saraultstrong
