Steve Otto Kidney Transplant

£1,870 of £5,000 goal

Raised by 67 people in 15 months
Hi, we are trying to raise money for our dad Stephen Otto to have a private Kidney transplant.
He was an energetic dad to 4 children, and enjoying life and work. He was diagnosed with mouth cancer back in 2000. He overcame this and thought life was back on track. Unfortunately he was then diagnosed with diabetes which has in turn caused his kidneys to fail. He found this out rather late and they are now only functioning at 5%. He desperately needs a transplant and all his children are willing to be live donors.
Unfortunately the NHS timeframe and process has not even been started although they know how eager we are. He will shortly start dialysis at home however long term this isn't affective as his kidney function is so low.
As a family we are now trying to raise money to get his kidney transplant privately as feel this would be quicker and in all honesty we're running out of time :(
If anyone could find it in their hearts to donate even the smallest amount we would all be so greatful to you :)
After researching the costs involved in a private transplant after contacting Imperial College London and Bupa, it's approximately £60,000 unfortunately.
I doubt we can raise this much but we can try!

Once again Thankyou all for your donations. Unfortunately our dad passed away on 9th July 2018. The money raised has gone towards his funeral, as a family we all appreciate your kindness in donations when my father was ill.

Thankyou to everyone who had donated to the fund to help my dad get the transplant he needs, it really is so appreciated. Our campaign alerted the correct team in regards to having the relevant tests needed, however since starting the fund my dads health has deteriorated and he isn't in a well enough state to have a transplant. His kidney and diabetes problems have started to cause other health issues including serious vascular leg problems which now means he will need a wheelchair when he is home. Unfortunately there is also the prospect of him losing both his legs. We would like to use the money raised so far to help towards his rehabilitation at home, he's so weak and we'd like to make his situation at home as comfortable for him as possible. We really didn't see any of these other health issues arising when we started his fund, and do feel bad that many donated towards the transplant which may now look like it won't happen. If anyone would like a refund please message me and we would be happy to transfer their donation back.

The average cost of dialysis is £30,800 per patient, per year with the NHS. 3% of the NHS budget is spent on kidney failure services. The indicative cost of a kidney transplant (including induction therapy but excluding NHSBT costs) is £17,000 per patient per transplant.
So surely it is more cost effective to look into a live donor transplant asap rather than a prolonged length of dialysis?!
