Our dear sweet sister, Stephanie Lopez, was admitted to the ICU with chest pain on Friday, May 18th. After having a CT scan, it was discovered that her descending aorta had a significant tear and was leaking blood.
The doctors decided to keep her in the Cardiac ICU and gave her medication to decrease her heart rate and blood pressure. They were hoping to decrease the amount of work her heart would have to do, and see if the aorta would start to heal on its own.
A second CT scan was done on Sunday that revealed that the tear in the artery was actually getting worse.
The doctors decided that she would need open heart surgery on Monday, May 21st to repair the damage.
Stephanie was prepped for surgery Monday morning at 11am. The family was told that it would be 5-6 hours long. Due to many complications during this delicate surgery, it would end up being a total of 19 hours.
She was finally taken back up to the Cardiac ICU Tuesday morning around 6:00am.
We are happy to report that after 19 hours of surgery, which included inspired direction for the surgeon and miracles in that operating room, Stephanie is in the ICU and beginning her recovery. She still has a long road ahead of her, but this morning she is stable and doing very well.
Stephanie will be sedated for the next couple of days to help with the recovery process, and then the doctors can begin to assess if there are other issues to deal with. Your continued prayers on her behalf are very much appreciated, and have made an incredible impact thus far.
