Stem Cell Therapy for Rob Aguilar
Vernon, BC, resident Rob Aguilar was a successful web developer until he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) . In only a handful of years, Rob has experienced a sharp decline in memory, mobility and overall quality of life.
Rob's life has not been an easy one, including the untimely death of his mother when he was a young child and the difficult years that followed. With a very small social circle and limited family support, Rob has been the youngest resident in a home for elderly dementia patients for the last several years. His disability funds barely cover the very minimum in care, so he can't afford certain luxuries, including more than 1 bath a week.
Rob spends most of his days lying in bed, with the TV to keep him company. But even TV isn't much fun since his vision has become further impaired, not to mention loss of dexterity in his hands to control the remote.
MS is widely believed to be an autoimmune condition – the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks and damages the protecting nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. This damage causes messages to and from the brain to be slowed, distorted or stopped altogether.
Recently, Rob has been approved for Stem Cell Treatment in California to help combat these attacks. Using stem cells obtained from Rob's own body, the procedure is designed to target and protect the myelin sheath (which helps carry electrical signals), by introducing adult stem cells that may differentiate into and repair damage. The goal is to try and rebalance the immune system and keep it from attacking itself.
Naturally, the cost of the procedure is not cheap, but will cost approximately $15,900 USD ($19,769 CAD).
Rob's Aunt Marie Aguilar is assisting Rob through this process and has created a banking account for this campaign. It is our hope that we may be able to offset some of the costs so Rob gets this chance.
