Hi, my name is David and for over 12 years I have been the primary caregiver to my wife, who suffered from a very progressive form of Early On-Set Alzheimer's Disease since she was 49 years old.
It has been the most traumatizing experience to go through, seeing my wife have to face this devastating disease. It was a 24/7 job, I lost many hours of sleep, and have felt isolated and alone, but never gave up in trying to provide the best care possible to my wife, throttling my mind and body so that I could care for all the needs required for such a disease.
Over time my wife went from walking, talking and eating to virtual silence and unable to help herself. This unexpected extremely difficult traumatizing disease can stop you in your tracks and is unrelenting and unforgiving and very progressive.
We have sacrificed everything these last 12 years, mentally, emotionally, physically and financially to care for my wife, but I never gave up on the love of my life.
I also know that Alzheimer’s Dementia requires Long Term Care and that carries a major financial commitment. I had to sell off everything (houses, cars, investments, retirement plans, savings) and more to provide the proper care for my wife. This disease can destroy you and your family and you may never recover from the pain and suffering you see each day. The first time I saw my wife have a seizure I almost lost it as I could see her leaving this earth. After 12 more I have forced my mind to be able to deal with it and address additional needs.
So we continued to fight this battle and never give up. Stefanie fought her ultimate battle and passed away to meet with her Creator in heaven. We are beyond sad to lose her, but we rest in knowing she no longer has to suffer. Though it has been such an incredibly hard journey, I am thankful that I will be reunited with her one day.
