Lisa flew out from Arizona immediately and is by Malik's side in California.

They need emergency funds to pay for Lisa's meals and lodging, pet care, as well as longer term funds for the mortgage payment and other bills while Lisa and Malik are both out of work. They are currently unsure if the hospital is in network with their insurance.

Hi everyone:

Unfortunately our journey has hit a bump, although thankfully not a major one.

We were fortunate enough to get Malik in to see a hepatologist at the Mayo Clinic, meaning he is getting some of the best care available. Our initial appointment was yesterday, during which the doctor recommended Malik go to the emergency room for an outpatient medical procedure. After the procedure and several hours of tests, Malik was re-admitted to the hospital.

We are now spending our second night here, and crossing our fingers there won’t be a third, but we won’t know until tomorrow. On the bright side it seems to be more for observational, cautionary reasons and he is more lucid and comfortable than he has been in weeks.

The journey continues, all we can do is take it day by day.

Thank you again for your ongoing support.

Today marks both Day 8 of Malik’s hospital stay, and the day of his discharge! We were told to prepare for at least 2 total weeks in the hospital, so the fact that we are heading home now is wonderful news.

We will be driving home to Arizona tomorrow, where we will start our long journey toward recovery.

Malik will need to be under the care of a specialist for at least several months. We are still not sure when he will be able to return to work. But we are excited to be going home to our home and our bed and our pets, and ready to handle whatever comes at us next.

Thank you again for all of your donations and kind words of support. We could not have done, and will not be able to continue doing this, without all of you.

Hi everyone,

Sorry for the radio silence for the past few days, things have been a little up in the air and we were waiting for a more concrete update before posting.

Malik has continued to show improvement every day, getting more lucid and stronger. He was downgraded yesterday from the ICU to the step down unit, and today we hope to be moved out of the ICU area all together!

We received a great update from his doctors today: he may be able to come home in a couple of days! When exactly will depend on his numbers continuing to improve and his strength coming back enough so he can be independent again. He’s going to start light physical therapy today to get that going.

Your support, both financial and emotional, has been more helpful than you could ever know. And we still have a long road ahead, because he will need a great deal of outpatient care with specialists in Arizona going forward. We are also unsure when he will be able to return to work, but we know it won’t be for a while yet.

But we will take the good news and use it as fuel to continue getting better. Anyone who knows Malik knows he is as strong-willed as they come, so I’m confident he will tackle the next few months with the same tenacity as everything else in his life.

Please continue to keep us in your thoughts.

Hi everyone,

We can’t thank you enough for your incredible generosity. With so much on our plates I can’t tell you what a relief it is to worry less about bills.

Malik is stable but still seriously ill. We are looking at at least 1 more week in the hospital, likely 2. After that the doctors will assess next steps for him.

Please know how grateful we are for the help. Our pets will be well taken care of, I will be able to stay at a nearby hotel and we don’t have to worry about missing bills or defaulting on loan payments. And while this hospital is in our network, everybody knows there are always surprise expenses especially when there is a multi-day ICU stay involved.

We are hoping that Malik will be able to move from the ICU to another floor today or tomorrow.

I will post updates as they come.
