Hey You – Yes, You! Have you ever been in a situation in which you were desperately looking for support? Your car broke down and you asked a friend for a ride? You lost your keys and ask your roommates to help find them? Or back in high school, when you forgot your pencil and asked the girl sitting next if she had a spare one? Well, I’m in such a situation right now. I need Your help with raising money to make my dream of attending Stanford University’s graduate program in journalism a reality! But first, let me tell you who I am.

My name is Felix, I’m a 22-year-old college student from Berlin, Germany. I came to the United States in 2012, right after graduating from high school. My parents weren’t very happy about that move, because I could have received a quality education in Germany at a fraction of the costs of American colleges. Yet, I was determined to make it happen somehow; and I did… by playing NCAA division 1 college soccer and obtaining a partial athletic scholarship from San Jose State University. Currently, I’m in my last semester of undergraduate studies, with a major in public relations and a minor in communication studies.

So, what else do I like besides playing soccer and getting good grades? Giving back to the community! In 2009, I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, a disease that affects not only the person who suffers from it, but the individual’s entire environment: family, friends, classmates, teammates, and coaches. Through the continuous support from these very people, I was able to regain control of my life, and eventually, my disease.

Two years after the diagnosis, I began to give speeches, presentations, and workshops about diabetes and sports. Focusing my efforts on kids and youth between the ages of 4 and 21, I wanted to make sure that they don’t have to go through the same challenges, struggles, and dangerous medical situations I had to go through before getting on top of my therapy. Educate, engage, and empower – to unite the diabetes community and limit the negative effects of the disease. Visit my website, thegermandiabetic.com, for more information.

I have reached the end of my bachelor’s degree coursework. I thought about going back to Germany, but I think I can be of more help here in Silicon Valley and the United States in general. So I decided to give it a shot and apply for ONE graduate school in America: Stanford University. While I wasn’t having too much hopes of getting accepted, I did everything in my power to make it happen. And guess what? It worked! I got admitted into Stanford’s graduate program in journalism for the 2016-17 academic year, beginning in September 2016. There’s only one thing left that I need to take care of, but it’s the hardest one of them all – raising a total of $74,415.

It would be unrealistic to ask for that much here, so I set my goal at $10,000, which would be a great start. If you are willing to support my dream of studying at one of the most prestigious and best colleges in the world, I would be forever thankful. I understand that you may not be able to give much, but every dollar helps. Think back to that pencil you borrowed from your classmate. Small actions can go a long way. With your donation, you are not only enabling me to pursue my dreams. You are also giving me the opportunity to continue and improve my service to the diabetes community. Please, help me to help others!

Thank you so much, Felix
