Stand w/ Diné (Navajo) Grandmothers

Donation protected
Once again, a delegation of Diné Grandmothers will be traveling from Black Mesa, AZ to build solidarity with the LA community. They will offer workshops on traditional practices (i.e. spooling & carding wool) at the Haramokngna Indigenous Cultural Center. Additionally several Grandmothers  are sending traditional handmade wool rugs, jewelry, and pottery for people in LA to purchase. We will update this campaign soon with the Facebook link to these events. We are asking folks to contribute what they can to cover the Grandmothers' transportation costs. Instead of starting a new GFM campaign we decided to continue the one that was started in March (so previous contributors would receive this message and updates). Thank you for your continued love & solidarity with the Diné resisters.

BACKGROUND

Since the 1970’s, under the Federal Relocation Act, the U.S. government and energy companies have been pushing the Diné (Navajo) off of their traditional homeland in Black Mesa, Arizona. This area was historically known to hold one of the richest coal deposits in the U.S. As a result, over 14,000 Diné people have been forcibly evicted from their homeland for the expansion of coal, uranium and natural gas operations.

Defending their right to exist and to live in accordance with their traditional ways, a community of Diné resisters have refused to be relocated. Guided by elders and grandmothers at the forefront, they have endured decades of harassment and intimidation and severe environmental and related health impacts to uphold that fundamental right.

Recent tactics to further destabilize and push remaining families off their land include impoundments of their sheep and cattle, with devastating effects - sheep are essential to the livelihood of the Diné as income and food.

Only through solidarity can this ancient culture be preserved and respect for Mother Earth be restored!
