Thank you again,

Team Malawi

Summary:

We are a group of 16 GCSE students from Elephant and Castle who are raising funds in order to work with a charity called Joshua Orphan & Community Care in Malawi to improve the educational facilities in a rural village. We will be living and working with the community for 12 days so that together we can help the local children to access a better education. Any support you can give us to make this trip happen will be so gratefully received. Thank you :)

A more detailed description of the project:

Whilst we are there we will work with a local grassroots NGO to work with the local community to help provide them with desperately needed facilities that will improve the education of the local children. This may be building an additional classroom or library but the project itself will depend upon both the immediate needs of the village and the amount of money we raise.

We are excited by this project because of the challenge it has been since day one. The huge costs involved mean that it would be impossible for us as individuals to afford the trip itself let alone the building costs. This is why we are committed to fundraising in as many different ways as we can as a team and to raise awareness of what our project entails.

In order for us to reach our target, we need to raise £40,000 by July 2017. We understand the enormity of this target and through personal contributions, organising charity events and generous donors we are half way there! But we need your support in order to help us reach our goal. Any donations are massively appreciated and we'd love to keep you informed of our progress both before and during the trip. If you would like us to come and present to your workplace about the trip then we'd be delighted to do so.

Who  we are:

We are a determined, enthusiastic and hardworking group of students from St. Saviour’s and St. Olave’s School in Elephant and Castle.  Our goal is to improve the educational facilities of the young people there and to immerse ourselves in a culture that is a world away from our own.

We applied to go to Malawi for a variety of different personal reasons but on reflection we realised our motivations all centred around the cornerstone of our school motto – that we are the ‘Makers of the Future’. We have all grown up in or around the inner city borough of Southwark, an area which many would consider a “challenging environment”. However we know that around the world people, especially children, suffer in far more challenging circumstances. We would like the opportunity to go abroad and visit another such culture to share experiences so that we can help to make their futures brighter. One of the key reasons that we are so passionate about the project is that we are not going to be tourists on holiday but will be staying in and working alongside the community. This is something that is so unique and special that it would be unforgettable and will leave a long lasting impact upon our views and actions.

Thank you so much for your kindness and generosity from all of us on Team Malawi and from all those in Chilangani village who will benefit from our visit. If you have any questions about our trip please contact us via this page.
