Angels for Ashley

Hi, my name is Ashley! I'm 23 years old and I was born and raised in Mérida, Yucatán, México.

I had a great older brother, and I say had because in 2013 he was diagnosed with MDS (myelodysplastic syndrome) which developed into Acute Myeloid Leukemia. He passed away from the illness at the beginning of 2015. This was all a shock to our small family as there was no family history of leukemia. I remember asking the doctor if I had to be checked every year as possibly getting it as well. He said it was very unlikely that I would get it, unfortunately he was wrong.

In August 2016 I was about to start my last semester in college when I went into the hospital because my feet were swollen and I was in pain and couldn't walk. I was there for almost a month while the Doctors were trying to figure out what was wrong. On September 1st , after being 6 days out of the hospital, I had to go back in. They did more testing and I was finally diagnosed with MDS (myelodysplastic syndrome) with an autoimmune disease called vasculitis.

You can imagine again the shock to our family of three now, as we didn't think I could get the same illness as my brother. MDS is usually in older adults and now two of us from the same family, at age 23 have gotten it.

Honestly, my mom didn't want to lose another child to this illness so we asked our hematologist in Mérida, Mexico for a recommendation for a specialist in the U.S. Since my mother is American and still has family in Chicago, we really wanted to find a specialist there as we knew we would have family support.

We got on a flight in January and started to see the specialist in Chicago. After going through all of the testing my only chance is to have a bone marrow transplant/stem cell transplant. Otherwise, my illness will develop into a leukemia.

You can imagine, all of our savings are dwindling down quickly which includes paying premiums to the insurance company. Through Go Fund Me we want to request financial assistance from all of you reading this to cover expenses during and after transplant. I will have to be monitored at least five years after transplant.

My situation is two-fold. I need the transplant to live and if I want to have children in the future, I need to harvest eggs now before transplant. After genetic testing, I have a 50/50 chance of passing on this genetic based disease to my children, so harvesting my eggs will give me the opportunity to have children after transplant and also, prevent passing on this illness to future generations.

At this time I'm unable to work and my caregiver, who's my mom, can't work because she has to take care of me. The money will be used for:

* Transplant

* Housing (after transplant, since I'll have to stay close to the hospital).

*Transportation 

* Food 

* Insurance 

* Process of harvesting eggs

* Additional tests and/or procedures not covered by insurance.

Hola, mi nombre es Ashley! Tengo 23 años, nací y crecí en Mérida, Yucatán, México.

Tuve un hermano mayor,  y digo tuve porque en 2013 fue diagnosticado con síndrome mielodisplásico, que evolucionó a una leucemia mieloide aguda. Falleció a principios del 2015. Esto fue una sorpresa para nuestra pequeña familia ya que nadie de ella habia tenido leucemia anteriormente. Me acuerdo que le pregunté al doctor que si tenía que checarme cada año ya que podría ser que me pasara lo mismo que a mi hermano. Él dijo que no necesariemente ya que no es probable que me suceda, desgraciadamente se equivocó.


En Agosto de 2016, iba a empezar mi último semestre de la carrera cuando tuve que ir al hospital ya que mis pies estaban hinchados, tenía mucho dolor y no podía caminar. Estuve en el hospital casi un mes mientras los doctores estaban investigado lo que pasaba en mi cuerpo. Después de haber estado 6 días fuera del hospital, ingrese otra vez. Hicieron más estudios y finalmente pudieron darme un diagnóstico. Éste fue síndrome mielodisplásico con una enfermedad autoinmune llamada vasculitis. 


Se podrán imaginar lo sorprendidos que estabamos toda la familia de ahora tres personas, porque nunca pensamos que me podría dar la misma enfermedad que la de mi hermano. Los síndromes mielodisplásicos usualmente le dan a personas mayores  de 60 años y ahora dos personas de la misma familia, a la edad de 23 años le ha tocado. 


Honestamente, mi mamá no quería perder  a otro hijo que tiene la misma enfermedad, así que le preguntamos a nuestro hematólogo en Mérida, México que nos recomendara a alguien en estados unidos. Como mi mamá es estadounidese y sigue teniendo familia en Chicago, realmente queríamos encontrar a alguien ahí, ya que también tendríamos más apoyo.

Nos subimos a un avión en enero y empezamos a ver a la especialista. Después de pasar todos los tests mi única oportunidad para vivir es un trasplante de médula ósea, de lo contrario mi enfermedad se puede convertir en una leucemia y más agresiva que la de mi hermano. 


Mi situación es un poco complicada. Necesito el trasplante  para vivir  y si quiero tener hijos en el futuro (cosa que si deseo) necesito congelar mis óvulos antes del traspante. Después de que hicieron exámenes genéticos, tengo 50/50 de probabilidad de pasar esta enfermedad genética a mis hijos, así que congelando mis óvulos me da la oportunidad de tener hijos después del transplante y también el poder prevenir pasar esta enfermadad a futuras generaciones. 


En este momento, no puedo trabajar y mi cuidadora, que es mi mamá tampoco puede. El dinero recaudado será usado para:


* El trasplante

* Vivienda (ya que después del transplante tengo que estar cerca del hospital)

* Transporte
* Comida

* Seguro de vida

* El proceso de recolección de óvulos
* Exámenes adicionales y/o procedimientos que el seguro no cubra.
