Spring Break camp for PEACE

A 2017 Wilkinsburg spring break story

Music and art spring camps maybe typical in many neighborhoods.  But for some families spring break camps can be expensive and require transportation that may not be available.  For families to take advantage of out of school programming, it is sometimes important to provide arts programming in the children’s own neighborhood, within walking distance of their homes, and to offer the service for little cost . With your help the Center for Civic Arts will raise $1600 to send 30 children to music camp this spring break. Help us provide our children a constructive, safe, and creative outlet that they will proudly share with their friends and family.

Media arts, music, peace, sanctuary and community are 5 key words to describe the planned 2017 Spring break for Wilkinsburg children ages 8 to 14.

Each morning, April 10 through April 14, music producer and musician Akil Esoon will come to the Christian Church of Wilkinsburg with his Apple portable sound studio to teach children to create songs about, and songs for their communities. Exploring the theme of peace, Akil will do what he does all over the city for children, he will teach children to express their thoughts and experiences in a caring environment.  In this camp our young people will reflect on the peace in their hearts, the peace on the streets, and use their voices and the music to make their thoughts heard.  Students will also learn about peace through the history of music, how to write and rhyme their lyrics, and experiment with digital beat, sound, and rhythm to create a song they will practice and perform for family and friends at the culminating celebration of spring.

This program is presented by the Center for Civic Arts, in partnership with the Christian Church of Wilkinsburg.  Civic Arts is a Wilkinsburg program dedicated to inspiring civic engagement and social change through the arts.  The Center for Civic Arts values citizens as the creators of culture, and stewards of their environment.  CCA will expand opportunities for people to connect through arts education, culture, public arts and creative place-making.  We value the arts as the thread that defines who we are, and the light that empowers communities.
