The R-Word! Spread the Word to End the Word!
Most people don’t think of this word as hate speech, but that’s exactly what it feels like to millions of
people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, their families and friends. What started as a youth-led grassroots effort in 2009 by a small group of students with one simple call to action, has evolved to communities across the world not only taking the pledge, but challenging others to talk, think and write with respect. We’ve had noticeable and sustainable impact.
The Arc of Fayette County has held rallies at the Fayette County Courthouse located in Uniontown, PA as well as other areas in the community to bring awareness to this campaign.
At these events, hundreds of people haves signed the banner and taken the pledge to support the elimination of the derogatory use of the r-word from everyday speech and promote the acceptance and inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities.
But this year, we want to do something amazing!
This year The Arc of Fayette County in cooperation with The Special Olympics of Fayette County will be introduced on the Senate floor by Senator Pat Stefano on Tuesday, March 28, 2017 at 12:45 pm.
Program Participants, Special Olympics Athletes, families, friends and advocates will take a coach bus to Harrisburg for this event.
HOW YOU CAN HELP?
We are requesting your support to help cover the expense of renting the bus, as well as educational materials and other printed materials.
