Help Sponsor a Room at Hackerman-Patz Pavillion

Two years ago, Erik underwent a bone marrow transplant at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Erik had to stay at The Hackerman-Patz Patient and Family Pavilion at Hopkins for over two months because we lived over an hour drive from the hospital. This is a facility managed by Hopkins for transplant patients. The Pavilion houses around 60 patients for a daily fee. During our stay, we noticed that many families were in a financial hardship and struggled to pay for the daily fee. Other families had to take loans, and several lost their jobs. This is not uncommon, both patients and caregivers face financial hardship. We, too, were faced with having to go without pay for over six months.
Last year we decided to do a fundraiser and donate the funds to sponsor a room at Hopkins. The total cost to sponsor a room is $15,000. We were able to collect $2,500. However, we are still in need to collect $12,500. The funds go towards the maintenance of a room, lower the daily rate that the patients must pay, help provide meals for the caregivers, and provide cleaning services while staying at the Pavilion. With the bone marrow transplant and similar procedures, a sterile environment is necessary to prevent possible infections.
This year we are reaching out to you and hoping that you can help move us closer to our monetary goal. We invite you to help by sponsoring Sofia during her walk, “El Camino del Norte” in Spain. Yes! Sofia is doing a pilgrimage of over 700 kilometers that will take around 35 days to complete. We are using the pilgrimage as a fundraiser for the sponsored room at Hackerman-Patz. Every donation will assist in closing the gap towards our goal of sponsoring a room.
You don’t have to worry about Sofia’s expenses. The trip has been paid for and any funds raised from the walk will go directly towards sponsoring a room. Erik and Apolonia will be cheering Sofia on from Virginia.
