Our sophomore English students have been working very hard this six weeks to earn their way to a rewards field trip! Only $6 per student will fund their trip!
This unit we have been reading Harry Potter and the Prison of Azkaban where we have studied how literature illustrates deeper themes like prejudice, mental health and the difficulties of adolescence. They were divided into groups (Hogwarts Houses) at the beginning of the six weeks and have spent the last 4 weeks earning points for their house by demonstrating work ethic, academic success, leadership skills, and positive classroom behavior. The winning house for each of the English II teachers will be rewarded with a field trip to celebrate their success.
For the field trip, we will be travelling to Tyler State Park and engaging in three "classes" that align with the Harry Potter theme and also academic standards. They are as follows:
Potions: Creating Galaxy Slime (Chemistry & Math)
Muggle Studies: Baking Cookies (Lifestyle and Career Sciences & Math)
Wand Lore: Creating their own "wand" (Art & English)
The students will also enjoy the beautiful nature of Tyler State Park which they majority have not experienced, even though they live so close!
We have a very high percentage of students at John Tyler who qualify for free or reduced lunch and therefore the financial strain of financing their own field trip would cause many students to miss out on the reward that they have earned. Each student WILL be responsible for investing in their trip by bringing $5 to cover their lunch. Donations will be covering class supplies and the fee for the shelter we will be renting.
We would love for you to consider investing in the educational and experiential opportunity for our students who have worked hard to attain this reward.
