Spinal Surgery in Germany

Donation protected
My name is Eden and I am 16 years old.  For several years my parents took me to Doctors/Chiropractors because of my back/hip/knee pain. None of them checked for scoliosis. My condition continued to worsen until my Mom asked that xrays be taken because we suspected I had scoliosis *a condition that causes the spine to curve sideways. We had the doctor take a look at my back and he noticed my backbone was in an s-shaped curve.  X-rays were ordered which confirmed-Moderate/Severe Idiopathic Scoliosis  Due to the late diagnois the only treatment available in Canada is Fusion. Once a spine is fused especially in the lumbar region the long term risks can include: nerve damage, hardware failure, disk degeneration and chronic pain. My parents decided to try alternative treatments to avoid surgery. They spent thousands of dollars on a custom brace, physio therapy and chiropractic treatments. Unfortunately none of these treatments have stopped the progression of my curves.  If we leave my scoliosis untreated the long term consequences are hip surgery, degenerative disk disease, chronic pain and compromised heart and lung function.
After researching less invasive options to Fusion we found out about a relatively new  procedure called ASC (Anterior Scoliosis Correction). This surgery allows the spine to remain flexible while straightening the curve. Unfortunately ASC is not available in Canada for skeletally mature adolescents. We have had to look for a qualified surgeon outside of our country. Dr. Trobisch in Germany has reviewed my xrays and due to my flexibility I am still a candidate for ASC. As the spine matures flexibility is lost and along with it my opportunity for this life changing surgery. We have inquired about BC Medical coverage for this surgery which is not available in our country. At this time all attempts have been unsuccessful. We will have to come up with all the funds needed for surgery, airfare and accommodations. Surgery has been scheduled to take place very quickly due to my skeletal maturity. We have limited time to come up with the remainder of funds needed before my Surgery Date: March 19, 2018
