Friday, July 26th was very tragic at the Fun F/X Warehouse and our dear friend and owner Vic Cao. While my assistant Director Matthew and I were in the basement setting up lights and camera shots and preparation for filming DR. SPIDERWACK'S MIND-BOGGLING COMPENDIUM OF FANTASTIC URBAN BEASTS scenes the next day, we smelled smoke. Then it started to pour into the basement where we were, and also on the main floor where we met the owner, and we quickly escaped out the front door. When we came outside smoke was billowing out of the second floor windows and then flames. Unfortunately due to low water pressure it took a long time for them to put it out.
No one was harmed in the fire, fortunately. However, not only Fun F/X's massive inventory lost, but much of our video equipment, puppets, costumes and props. We are very thankful the fire didn't happen during filming with 25+ cast and crew in the building.
We are regrouping on the film and trying to move forward with a few more shoots this summer, but it will mean replacing a lot of equipment and hand-crafted art. We lost around $3,000 worth of stuff (though certainly poor Vic lost far, far more--hopefully his insurance takes care of a lot of it). We will also see if by chance any of our stuff survived somehow, but based on the fire, we are assuming a complete loss. We plan to keep filming over the next month as much as we can then finish up next summer.
