Special Ed Teacher Alex Zavala Needs Your Help

Alex Zavala of McKinney, Texas needs your help. This elementary school Special Education Teacher, Marine, and Father of two had a life-altering bicycle accident on Sunday, October 6, 2019. He was riding his bike like so many times before in a neighborhood he was all too familiar with when he lost control. He flipped over his bike, hit his head, and was knocked unconscious. A good Samaritan saw the accident and rushed to his aid. The paramedics arrived quickly and took Alex to the McKinney Medical Center where he had emergency brain surgery to stop the bleeding. He also had broken ribs and wounds on his right shoulder, arm, and leg. We are not sure why Alex wasn't wearing a helmet on this particular day, but it will be a decision he will undoubtedly regret for years to come.
After several days in ICU, Alex finally opened his eyes and his family rejoiced. He is trying desperately to speak and to regain his motor skills, but his journey to recovery will be long and challenging. With the love and support of his family and friends and the fighting spirit Alex has always had, we have faith that this special man will return to us better than ever, but it will be a long road.
The timing of this traumatic accident couldn't have been worse. You see, Alex just switched from the Plano Independent School District to the Frisco Independent School District this year. He started working at Bessie Gunstream Elementary School in August, but with only two months under his belt, his benefits have not yet activated (other than 10 days of PTO). As such, Alex will no longer receive a paycheck after this month, nor will he benefit from short-term or long-term disability.
Alex will need help with medical bills, rehabilitation fees, and other expenses for an undetermined amount of time. Please consider giving what you can to make financial challenges the least of Alex's and his family's worries.
