Hola/Hey everyone!!
My name is Jean Alex Bernardin, currently a first-year Spanish teacher (grades 9-12) at GRAD Academy in Memphis, Tennessee. I would love to reward students who have pushed themselves academically with a field trip to a Spanish speaking restaurant to help further their education. Meaning they will need an average of 93% or above to attend the trip. The visit will broaden my students culinary horizon, so I am excited to see them apply the language skills in a real life situation by ordering food and engaging in Spanish. Unfortunately, I can’t do it alone. I need help, which is why I’m starting a GoFundMe to help pay for expenses.
This past year has been pretty difficult due to lack of resources surrounding education. Despite this, I made a pledge that I would give my students the best education possible. At the beginning of the year, I established clear expectations and goals that my students needed to meet, and I’m proud to say that many of them met and even exceeded those expectations. I would love to reward them for such hard work and dedication.
Even more so, I want to reward them for perseverance in the face of adversity. Black students in an impoverished community face daily turmoil that challenges every aspect of their beings. With all that goes on in their lives, education is last on their minds. However, many of my students who have fought and are still fighting showed up to class and opened their minds to learning. I want to further their education by taking them to a Spanish owned restaurant where all of their interactions will be done in Spanish, such as ordering food and interviewing staff to learn about Spanish culture.
My students would benefit tremendously from this field trip. Not only will it assist with language acquisition, but it will broaden my students' culinary horizon.
