Hi! This is Sid!
Sid’s seeking surgery for his jaw.
Sid was adopted a little over a month ago from San Antonio, TX. I spotted him on Facebook, instantly knew I couldn’t live without him, and made the 15 hour drive from CO a few weeks later to bring him home.
He now resides in the CO Rocky Mtns with myself, my boyfriend, and his new brother Mongo. We have been over the moon since adopting Sid, and are hoping to help him live his best life.
So, what's his deal?
Sid’s bottom jaw suffered an injury probably pretty early on in his life. Since the injury was not addressed, his jaw healed in a way that essentially fused itself shut, with just enough room for his tongue to hang out (...and it does 99% of the time).
Since Sid is unable to move his jaw, he laps his food up with his tongue. He’s basically on what we call a “Sid Smoothie” diet.
His face also appears to be a bit “wonky” because while the side with the injury’s growth was stunted, the side without injury kept growing as usual, which causes his unique “Simpson”-like look.
Although Sid has adapted to eating, and life in general, there are very serious risks that come with not having surgery to correct his jaw.
Just some of these risks include...
-Choking from vomiting
-Aspirating
-Defenselessness
-Dental Issues
-Unable to pant and cool off properly
-If use of tongue was ever lost due to a bee sting/frost bite/infection from drying & cracking etc. he would have no way to eat and could essentially starve
So, what can be done?
We considered these risks and decided to take Sid on a 3 hour trek to Colorado State University to get their take on it all. The dental specialists at CSU highly recommended doing surgery and informed us that the type of surgery they're wanting to perform is really not that uncommon, and had just performed it on a feline a couple weeks ago with great results.
They are essentially cutting a small section of his injured mandible out to allow for movement. Sid would be spending one night in the hospital and would be free to go home the following day.
The dental specialists at Colorado State University are very confident in their ability to perform this surgery, and ultimately give Sid a new lease on life, and a safer one at that!
This surgery is estimated at $4300. This includes his surgery, medications and follow ups. We are really hoping to be able to set a date for the surgery as soon as November 13th.
Please help us give Sid a better life. Any amount helps, and is so greatly appreciated.
Thank you so much for any help you are able to provide, along with taking the time out of your day to read about Sid!
