We come to ask you to join us in supporting our dear friend Soraya Medina as she battles late stage cancer. In the coming days, weeks and months Soraya will be undergoing medical and holistic treatment.
Having previously overcome breast cancer, Soraya was diagnosed with a second round of advanced breast cancer (TNBC) in late November. Just days after receiving this life altering news the house she lived in with her partner and her daughter caught fire and they were forced to move into temporary housing. Having just moved again they have finally just settled into new digs and are now prepared to fight for Soraya’s life. We need your help now more than ever.
Soraya is a fierce contributor and leader to our community. You may have been impacted by her work if you ever witnessed her leading a workshop in skid row about foraging or cooking, or you may have conversed with her at the CSA/farmers market she co-founded or you may have seen Soraya performing a Cultural dance performance at a community event or you may have attended one of her health and wellness events. In fact, Soraya’s impact on our community can be traced back almost 3 decades when she was a youth organizer for ACLA land trust and through her twenties as co-founder of the bookstore, Bohemia Books in Highland Park & Mac Arthur Park, CA .Not only is Soraya an inspiration through her community work and activism, Soraya is an inspirational parent to 11 year old Violeta and 20 year old Sienna, now studying English and Environmental systems at UCLA.
The coming weeks and months are going to present Soraya and her family with huge financial obstacles. Since the diagnosis Soraya has been forced to not work as she focuses on her healing all while having to deal with the stress and trauma of losing a home to fire.
Your support will pay for the following expenses.
• Rent for one year as Soraya can not currently work.
• Chemotherapy Expenses (first phase of Chemo is scheduled for next 6 months)
• Explant (removal of breast implants)
• Non traditional treatments (acupuncture, etc)
• Co-Pays
• Prescription Medications
• COBRA payments
• Transportation
• In Home Care
• Moving expenses due to fire
• Replacement of valuable home goods due to fire
