Help Sophie's Barrister Dream

Donation protected
I have secured a place on the Bar Professional Training Course, my last step to complete my legal training to become a Barrister. However, despite obtaining awards and a scholarship of £1,000 from MMU, the course fees are still a sizeable undertaking of almost £12,000.

Currently, I am aiming to raise one instalment of the required course fees, to assist me in my final studies, after completing four years; achieving a 2:1 in MLaw an exempting law degree encompassing LLB and LPC.

Although it is less unusual now, I am not from a traditional legal family and was the first Piper to have studied at university, but more specifically law has become my life, I have taken every opportunity over the past four years of studying law and I have loved every second of my legal career so far.

More than just my course, I have gained success in several extra-curricular activities and been an active member of my law school, briefly outlined below;

- I recently won our Internal Mooting Competition 2017, held in the UK Supreme Court, which was judged by its' then President Lord Neuberger, having previously held the title in 2015.

- I have been involved in mediation for four years and competed from an internal university level, up to being a semi-finalist of the International ADR competition.

- After competing and assisting with training our successful university teams, I am now an accredited Civil and Commercial Mediator.

- Negotiated at the national final 2017 in Wembley stadium in march of this year.

- In addition to competiting, I founded the UCLan Bar Society, hosting multiple Law Balls and being a Lancashire Law School Ambassador for three years.

- Furthermore, I have been volunteering, in the Personal Support Unit for a year, in the Preston combined (criminal, civil and family) courts, assisting those whom do not have legal representation or those whom have never encountered the legal system before, who simply need assistance or greater knowledge, before what can be an overwhelming experience.

Unfortunatley, my health is no secret. I have a degenerative bone disease called 'Juvenile / Paediatric onset Hypophosphatasia' ; a rare degenerative bone disease, resulting in soft bones, multiple fractures and regular dislocations, to name a few. Nevertheless, this is something I do not intend to let impact my career.

However, the gene-replacement therapy I have been waiting nine years for, has just been given NICE approval. Consequently, I am to participate in the first human clinical trial in the UK, whilst undertaking the extremely demanding BPTC.

Consequently, the daily self-administed injections and all of the 'lovely' side effects on top of a full-time BPTC course. Regrettably, this will hinder my ability to work and gain the remaining tuition fees required to fund my last qualification to become a Barrister.

I am so grateful for the time taken to read this part of my story and any support given would be gratefully received, allowing me to put my all into my journey to the English Bar.
