SophieLou StemCell Treatment-Autism

Family, Friends, Friends-of-Friends, and anyone who feels compelled to help:

Sophia Louise Molina “Sophie Lou,” is a sassy, Autistic, five-year-old who enjoys playing on her iPad, crunching on Doritos, and jumping on trampolines.

Sophie was diagnosed as non-verbal Autistic when she was almost three years old. Sophie Lou currently attends a school for Autism where she receives ABA therapy. Since she began attending this school, Sophie Lou has made huge strides: she sings nursery rhymes, she leads her family members to the pantry when she wants a snack or to the fridge when she wants a juice, she listens to instructions, and she is very loving.

Although she is miles from where she began, Sophie Lou still doesn’t speak in full sentences, she isn’t potty trained, and she doesn’t eat food other than cheesy Doritos and In-N-Out french fries. The purpose of this donation page is to help Sophie Lou get to Panama where she will receive stem cell treatments; these treatments are bringing many Autistic children around the globe one step closer towards becoming neuro-typical. Treatments will consist of four IV injections of expanded allogeneic mesenchymal stem cells. With your help, blessings, and prayers we will be able to take Sophie Lou to Panama so that she may receive these life-changing treatments.

Sophie has already been accepted into the program, but we must come up with the funds within 75 days so that Sophie can participate in the treatment.

We are so thankful to receive your donations and support, $1.00 is one step closer to Panama. Any donation is appreciated whether it be $1, $10, or $100.

My name is Jennifer Molina-Diaz, I am Sophie Lou’s paternal aunt and godmother, her “Nina.” I have been raising Sophie since she was an infant. On August 18, 2012, God brought a miracle into our family. She had a full head of dark brown hair, squinty brown eyes, and perfect pink lips. We knew she was special from the moment she arrived. She wasn’t sickly, she wasn’t temperamental, but there was something different about her. Sophie had trouble eating, she didn’t maintain eye contact, and was late to crawl, these are not life-threatening traits but as a mother of three I was concerned.  Sophie wasn’t meeting typical milestones at six months, nine months, and so on. She didn’t give us eye contact at six months and she didn’t babble or respond to her name at twelve months.

Sophie Lou started in the Head Start Program when she was 12 months old and continued there until she was diagnosed at 30 months. At the Early Head Start program she received one-on-one attention and could socialize with other toddlers. She also received physical therapy because of her low muscle tone (as soon as we knew it she was crawling all over the place!). With the help of staff and a bit of mother’s intuition, Sophie was diagnosed as non-verbal autistic.

After Head Start she moved to a PPCD (Preschool Program for Children with Disabilities) classroom at Shannon Elementary. Sophie Lou made a lot of friends and had many loving teachers in the year she attended Shannon. In the summer of 2014 Sophie attended a summer camp at Marigold Academy, School for Autism. There she received ABA therapy and we began noticing changes which led us to enroll her full time at Marigold.

Autism, or autism spectrum disorder, refers to a range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication, as well as by unique strengths and differences. Sophie is unable to speak in full sentences; until she was three years old we didn’t hear any words come out of her mouth. This, however, doesn’t mean she is unable to communicate—it just means she has a more difficult time than your average five-year-old. She has trouble conveying her emotions which can be difficult for non-family members to understand, for example: when she becomes very excited she squeals loudly (think, Daryl Hannah in Splash), she gets upset by minor changes in routine, and she runs away from loud noises. Sophie engages in repetitive behavior that others might find odd or disturbing: she spins in circles without getting dizzy, she runs back and forth without getting tired, she smacks her face when she’s upset, and she pinches her neck to fall asleep. Sophie Lou is also not sensitive to pain, if she falls or injures herself she is unable to process the pain she might be feeling which can be very troubling and stressful as a parent. Sophie Lou has a very difficult time eating, this is very common for Autistic children. For some texture is everything for others its purely visual, for Sophie Lou, it’s a mystery. She lives on a diet consisting of cheesy Doritos, In-N-Out french fries, spoonfuls of Nutella, and gallons of mango juice. We’ve tried nitrate-free cold cuts, pudding, chicken nuggets, mac and cheese, vegetables, you name it—we’ve tried it! When you’re a mother, you will try just about anything to ensure that your child is happy and healthy. I’m not Sophie Lou’s mom, but she’s my child.

Sophie Lou has a bold personality. She has the most infectious laugh and the brightest smile. Most Autistic children prefer to be alone and do not like to be physically touched. We are highly blessed that Sophie Lou loves hugs and kisses and will meet new people. With stem cell treatment Sophie Lou could be one step closer to improved speech, eye contact, potty training, full nights of sleep, healthier eating, and expressive skills.

Today, Sophie’s favorite movie is Disney’s The Good Dinosaur. Her favorite snack is Tostitos Hint of Lime tortilla chips. Her favorite shoes are her burlap velcro Toms. Her favorite stuffed animal is her JellyCat Unicorn, Jelly.

Thank you for visiting our page and making a small contribution that will largely impact Sophie’s life. If you’d like more information please contact us.
