Sophia Travis Women in Gov't Plaza
Donation protected
Sophia Grace Mackie Travis (October 4, 1965-September 19, 2012) had a genius for bringing people together and making life beautiful. She was a loving wife, mother, daughter, and friend; a talented musician and visual artist; and a passionate public servant.
She grew up all over the world, and chose Monroe County to be her home. She was a dedicated member of the County Council from 2004-2008, and she lent her time and talents to numerous charitable organizations in our community.
To honor her legacy and to promote the full participation of women in government and community service, we have commissioned internationally celebrated local limestone artist Dale Enochs to design and build a plaza on the grounds of the Monroe County Courthouse.
The Sophia Travis Women in Government Plaza will provide a beautiful and fully accessible place for people to gather and connect, and will allow Sophia to continue bringing people together in her inimitable way.
It will be a place for people to have picnics, talk about politics, create art, and enjoy downtown events. It will use art to bring community members together while also celebrating the contributions that Sophia Travis and numerous other women have made to Bloomington and Monroe County.
Please join us creating a plaza that will enhance the Courthouse square, promote fellowship, and inspire women and girls to participate in government and community service. Your contribution is tax-deductible, and whether you can give a little or a lot, your gift is deeply appreciated!
