My name is Sooyoung, I am raising money to finish the last 18 months of Medical school.
I started Nottingham Medical School in 2008, and I've had to pay International fees even though I have lived in the UK since I was 8 years old due to administration problems at the Home office. I've also had unforseen family circumstances during my time at University which were beyond my control, which meant that my parents could not support me with all of the fees.
I have been suspended by the University for not paying the fees and have had to take several years out of the course, which has been very hard because I had to give up what I really enjoyed doing without knowing what else to do. Over the last 8 years, I have managed to study 3 and a half years of the 5 year course due to generous support of friends. I've passed all my exams.
I finally got my residency in the UK in 2013. However I was not able to switch from International to home fees. I have looked into all bursaries/grants and have spoken to just about every single department and staff at Nottingham University but they said they were unable to help me to finish the last 18 months.
I was told by the medical school that I had to finish my course within a 10 year timeframe which means that I have to return to finish the rest of my course this year (2016) paying the international fees. I thought that the door had closed to finishing Medicine at Nottingham as this was an unrealistic amount of money to raise in a very short space of time.
However, very recently I found out from another department that I am now able to re-apply to study Medicine at Nottingham as a home student, and if I am successful then I will be able to apply for 'recognition of learning' which would mean that hopefully I can start where I left (4th year).
The condition that I can re-apply to Nottingham is that I need to pay off the exiting debt that I owe them. I have been paying it back monthly over the last 18 months but I won't be able to pay the whole amount back before I have to apply again.
I am raising £7450, which is the remaining amount I owe the university and this needs paying as soon as possible so that I can prepare my application this summer knowing that it is a possibility. (This amount still needs to be paid whether I finish Medicine or not). This is the last year I can re-apply to Nottingham because if I leave it any longer, the chances of me being able to start from 4th year will be very slim and I will almost certainly have to start my course all over again.
I have had many other jobs in the last few years and I have considered giving up Medicine several times as there have been so many difficulties and barriers, but I have realised that even after 8 years, I still am passionate about it. I think it suits my personality and skill set completely. I know there will be lots of stresses and difficulties of being a doctor, especially in this climiate, but I know that it will make me happy and fulfilled knowing that I am doing what I have always wanted to do.
I really appreciate your support. As the door hasn't completely closed yet for me to finish my course in Nottingham, I just want to try one last time and being able to pay off £7450 would give me this opportunity. There are still hurdles to overcome but I am hopeful and whatever the outcome in the end, I will not regret trying one last time.
