A message from Stephen Fry
Beloved Friends —
As you may know, I have been a proud supporter of the Save Soho movement since it began in 2014. As Chairman I have done what I can, along with many, many others, to assist founder Tim Arnold and the Save Soho group in their mission to bring to full public awareness the threats to the future of this beloved and unique community and our favourite cultural and social hub.
There have been successes along the way: our very public lobbying may, we believe, have helped greatly in the rescue of Madame Jojo’s and Soho Square.
However, the future of Soho as we know and love it is still a concern.
In no way are we interested in holding back the tide of progress and preserving Soho in aspic, but we do believe it is possible to stop, think and develop with sensitivity and sense without the risk of Soho losing its character.
We believe that the power of film will be an effective means of rallying everyone who shares affection for Soho and getting this message across.
Music and video legend Kevin Godley began work with Tim on a terrific film last year in which Jools Holland, Robert Elms, I and many others have already taken part. The film’s purpose is to highlight all that is special about Soho.
We have already been granted a theatrical screening by Philip Knatchbull of The Curzon Cinema Group. In addition, David Lammy MP has offered us the House of Commons for a Save Soho event in which to screen the film. This gives us a very real chance to galvanise the public and media and to effect real change before it’s too late.
Now to the meat of it:
What we need is funding to complete the film. The good news is we have already raised £13k. A further £13k would enable us to incorporate archive footage and allow for further shooting days to film witnesses and cheerleaders for Soho who haven’t yet had a chance to contribute.
If you feel as strongly as we all do about Soho, I hope you or your company may be encouraged to make a donation so that we can make this film and bring its message to all who care about Soho.
In hope, with thanks and love
Stephen Fry
