SocialScience/SocialConscience is a campaign to raise funds for several organizations and schools in Livingstone, Zambia, where I will spend a month collecting dissertation data between December 2018-January 2019.

During my time as a PhD student, I have recognized the gap existing between the process of conducting research and ensuring that our investigations do more than benefit us as scholars. As I prepared my dissertation proposal and to collect my data (which involves understanding sustainable tourism development challenges and gender related issues in lesser economically developed countries), I wanted to ensure that my project would provide direct benefits to the communities who would be sharing their knowledge and insight with me. This idea was further supported by the Conservation and Tourism Society (CATS) of Livingstone, Zambia, who wanted to provide additional support to schools and organizations throughout the Livingstone Community.

I have been unsuccessful in securing baggage waivers for additional luggage allowances, and most of these organizations do not have platforms to raise money online (i.e. official non-profit status). In this case, I do not have the luggage capacity to transport items and many of the goods are also less expensive in-country. Therefore, I will be raising the money, purchasing goods onsite (in Livingstone, Zambia), and giving the items to the organizations directly. The money raised in this campaign to purchase goods will be distributed evenly among each group.

Below, you will find a list of the organizations, their needs, as well as their respective websites, if available. You are welcome to donate directly to them, if they offer the option, and is your donation method of choice. I will be providing photo-proofs of the items purchased to ensure transparency of the funds spent and these photos will be posted on Facebook in the SocialScience/SocialConscience group starting in December at:  https://www.facebook.com/groups/SocialScienceSocialConscience/

The groups in need include:

1)Baobuyu Learning Center- provides free schooling to young children in the Mwandi area. They also offer programs like "Girl Power," which provides classes on sexual health and reproduction.  Currently, they are raising money to build a traditional playground and to purchase themed t-shirts as an incentive for young girls who remain active in Girl Power for at least 10 consecutive classes!

*NEEDS Include: school supplies (e.g. pencils, lined paper, books, teaching aides, software), 20 shirts to be imprinted with logos, and funds that will contribute to playground construction.

3)Kwathu Children's Home/Ministries- is an orphanage which provides a safe home for vulnerable and homeless children, offering empowerment and life skills. They also provide free education to 200+ children, and are preparing to host two Christmas parties to provide needed items/gifts to underprivileged children (between 4-18 years) this upcoming holiday. Their most pressing need includes school supplies to support their ability to continue offering free education.

4)Linda South Basic School- provides education to children up to grades 7 for a fee. Currently, CATS has initiated a drive to help students, specifically participating in their conservation classes who are advancing to grade 8, with the purchase of required school uniforms. These uniforms cost around k300= $25 USD, per child, and some schools do not permit students to attend without proper uniforms. Additional clothing items are also needed as numerous students are unable to afford footwear and suitable attire.

*NEEDS Include: school supplies (e.g. pencils, lined paper, books, teaching aides, software). Funds to alleviate the cost of school uniforms and purchase other clothing items.

5)Maramba Old People's Home- established in 1965, MOPH houses elderly persons who are age 60 and older, and have no support system to assist them in caring for their needs.  The home has very limited funding and requires community participants to aid in the care of its members.

*NEEDS Include: worship music, arts and crafts activities, games, first-aid/medical supplies.

*Website: no official site, but info on previous projects can be found through a Google search.

6)Twabuka School- educates children in primary and middle education, located in the Sinde area. They have a number of initiatives including a GMO-free gardening project and a chicken egg project to help raise funds for the school. Like most schools, their enrollment surpasses capacity and school supplies are always needed.

*NEEDS Include: school supplies (e.g. pencils, lined paper, books, teaching aides, software), gardening supplies, and basic first-aid supplies.
