On April 19th, Zoe was admitted to UVA hospital for emergency surgery to remove a grapefruit sized tumor from her abdomen. What doctors initially thought was an intestinal blockage turned out to be something far more serious.
Zoe was diagnosed with Rhabdoid Sarcoma, a very rare form of cancer. There are only 200 reported cases worldwide, with only 20 cases being in females. Unfortunately, the cancer has now spread to more of Zoe's abdomen, including her liver and kidneys. Zoe has now begun very aggressive chemotherapy to hopefully shrink the cancerous masses and prevent the spread of these cells any further.
Zoe is receiving treatment at UNC - Chapel Hill and is under the care of the leading expert in this type of pediatric sarcoma, Dr. Andrea A. Hayes-Jordan. The family felt an immediate connection with Dr. Hayes-Jordan, and are so thankful to be in her care.
Kim and Greg have sought opinions from multiple doctors and hospitals across the country, battled with their insurance company (who has now dropped them), found a new insurance plan that begins July 1, and still have somehow found time to be amazing parents to both of their girls.
The financial implications illness of this are significant. They are already looking at around $80,000 for the initial surgery and subsequent testing at UVA. Even with insurance, they are still looking at significant costs for Zoe’s treatment, added to the fact that neither Kim nor Greg are able to work right now.
They are getting some assistance from family, but it is not enough to cover the realities of cancer treatment. We have set up this GoFundMe account for Zoe’s medical expenses and the costs associated with frequent travel to and from Chapel Hill.
