Small steps, new beginnings.

My name is Kathryn Mills. I am a 40-year-old emergency nurse and single mother to my gorgeous daughter, Dellah.  When I was 20, I was given the news that made my heart stop beating and my world came crashing down.  I had Multiple Sclerosis. Being in my graduate year of my nursing degree, my head reeled with what this meant for me. Could I ever work as a nurse? Would I ever have children? Would I be able to 'walk' down the aisle? So many unknowns. I am grateful that I did get to do all three of these things, however as is the nature of this disease, there are just so many more unknowns ahead of me.

During this time I have tried literally every treatment that is available at this time in Australia. Every, single one.  Each one has left me feeling more depleted of hope, on hearing the repetitive news "I am sorry, this treatment has not helped you Kathryn".  I am left with the reality now, that possibly any day...week...month...I may be unable to stand and therefore unable to work as this disease continues to deprive me of the ability to maintain everyday function.  Far worse than this though, I am terrified of not being able to spend any real quality time with my girl, which breaks my heart into a million pieces.

Ongoing research and clinical trials, spanning over decades, from all parts of the globe have shown that with HSCT treatment the progression of this disease is halted and in many cases, remarkably, it has improved the quality of life for most patients.  HSCT or hematopoietic stem cell transplant is a type of transplant that uses the person’s own stem cells.  These cells are collected in advance, stored at sub-zero temperatures and returned at a later stage, after high dose chemotherapy. This is all done within the hospital in Moscow and is not currently an available treatment option here in Australia. The total cost of this treatment is $72,000AUS.

I feel like the total uncertainty and crippling dread that has been associated with my future is now starting to lift.  For the first time in a long time I am hopeful. Everyone needs a little hope, a dash of wish and the strength of courage in their life at times and so I welcome you all to join me on this journey.

I have officially been accepted as a patient in Russia to receive this treatment in May, this year.  I am hopeful that with your support, having this treatment, will at the very least, halt the progression of my MS.

Kathryn xx.
