Diabetes is a serious non-curable disease striking children.   The diagnosis can be devastating to the child and family.  Neither ever stops thinking about diabetes being that care and management is 24/7.  Learning to self-manage diet, physical activity, and medication everyday, and "feel normal" is a survival goal.  Slam Dunk for Diabetes is a non-profit 501c3, founded to help children and their families do just that.  Since most of our kids come from underserved communities where access to recreational and educational activities is limited, kids can only attend with the help of donations from people who care about improving the health of the next generation.  Our costs for aa child to participate in camp is $400 for 3 days.  Even this is low since most people donate their time.  So we need help to sustain Slam Dunk!

Our Mission

Slam Dunk for Diabetes empowers children with diabetes to take control of their lives and their diabetes by using innovative experiences that provide them with the knowledge, support, and motivation to lead healthy, happy and productive lives.

Slam Dunk for Diabetes is a unique self-management learning and empowerment program for children with diabetes.   We provide kids with diabetes the opportunity to learn through experience in a physically active and fun environment.  Children learn to check their blood glucose levels and take action with their insulin or food to maintain safe exercise free of hypoglycemia.  This kind of decision-making empowers children with the knowledge and skill to manage an incurable disease for the rest of their lives.

At SD camp a child’s desire to learn is stimulated and motivated by behaviors of other children in the camp.  SD offers children with diabetes the opportunity to learn from other kids with diabetes.  Kids come from all over the country to participate in Slam Dunk.
