Simba’s Dental Surgery

Hello everyone!! So, I am not the type of person to organize an online fundraiser, but this cat desperately needs help!!

This orange male tabby, nicknamed “Simba” and “Buddy” has been hanging around our apartment/neighbors yard for the last year and a half. We always figured he belonged to someone because he was so friendly. But he also looked like a stray so we were confused.

Around springtime of this year, we noticed that he is (or was!) VERY skinny, looks extremely unkempt, is drooling excessively and has a bleeding eye. Something was definitely wrong.

The woman who lives in the apartment below us started to feed him because she noticed he was coming around more. Almost every day! This was because I had started feeding him too! I recognized him from last year, except the “mouth condition” had gotten WAY worse.

Simba’s mouth is extremelly swollen. His gums are also almost a blue/grey color. All of his teeth are broken, mangled, different lengths, point different directions and a few are even missing. His jaw is crooked. He looks like he got in a fight- which is surprising because he is so sweet!

Simba won’t let anyone go near his mouth. Chris (the woman who lives downstairs) and I try our best to clean up his fur and mouth area. It really hurts him because he screams in pain and becomes very defensive.

I could tell that Simba’s gums/mouth were infected because of the foul odor. I can’t even imagine how painful this must be for him. He can only eat soft canned cat food that has been soaked in water. Even then, he has a lot of trouble. He makes a mess but it’s so cute!!!

When Brendon and I had brought him to the vet for the first time, we were given an estimate of close to $7,000 for the total cost of his procedure. There was no way we could afford this. I also had a feeling something was “off,” and I was right.

Chris ended up taking Simba (or “Buddy” as she calls him) to her vet that she takes her other cat to. This vet is reliable, honest and fair.

He estimates that Simba is about 8 years old and that he was hit by a car several years ago- hence the broken, mangled teeth and crooked jaw. Chris’ vet suspects that when Simba got hit, he didn’t heal correctly/had no vet treatment.

This is heartbreaking because Simba is neutered. This means he once belonged to someone. It’s apparent he just wants to be loved. When I let him into my apartment to cool off from the hot summer day, he follows me EVERYWHERE- even when I get up from my desk to walk 20 feet to the bathroom. He sleeps on the ground right at my feet while I do homework. He’s a good boy.

So, I am turning to crowdfunding to help raise money for the surgery Simba needs. Contrary to what the previous (sketchy) vet said, Simba does NOT have cancer!!

However, he will need all of his teeth removed because the infection is so severe. This will also help his jaw close more easily (although it will never close perfectly due to the way his broken jaw healed). The vet said once the inflammation subsides, so will Simba’s excessive drooling- and most importantly, his pain.

This procedure requires Simba to be under anesthetic for an estimated 3-4 hours. The medications he will need prior, during and after surgery will be costly. The amount of money we are trying to raise may not cover everything, as we were only given an estimate. The cost of after care and follow up appointments are a whole other story, but anything.. literally, anything, we are able to raise will most definitely help us out.

Any and all help is greatly and kindly appreciated. Words cannot express my gratitude. Thank you so much.

Love,
Emily (and Simba!)
