Summer of Sign Language

Learning American Sign Language, better known as A.S.L., has always been a goal for me. I aspire to be fluent in A.S.L. before my high school graduation. This achievement will help my college application stand out from others who do not possess this important trait.


I have aspired to be a speech-language pathologist for as long as I can remember. I want to help people who can't speak find a form of communication. I first learned about sign language when I saw a speech therapist sign to a child who could not talk. I was fascinated by how people can communicate without speaking. My dream is to attend Temple University for speech-language pathology and interpretation.


Once I am A.S.L. certified, I can become an interpreter. An early advance in my interpreting career will be profitable for my success. I will be able to gather traits that will give me a deeper understanding of my future job.


With your funds, I can become more engaged in deaf culture. Right now, I am unable to communicate with the deaf. However, once I learn American Sign Language, I will be able to attend events and interact with people who are hearing impaired. These perks will help me gain a better understanding of deaf culture and will make me more comfortable signing to people who are deaf.


I have attempted to learn sign language through websites, but I feel that I would benefit more from a hands-on course. I recently found some classes and summer camps, but they aren't nearby which will require me to drive farther than I intended to. Since the classes will be farther away, I will have to pay more for gas money. Also, the price of textbooks, extra help on the subject, and the class are somewhat out of my price range. I found a camp throughout the summer that offers A.S.L. classes for teens. The camp is far away but with extra funds, I will be able to use the money to attend the camp. That opportunity will allow me to meet other people interested in A.S.L.. Your donations will allow me the funds I need to achieve my goal.
