"Signing" Up to Aid Kathleen Middle

Donation protected
At Kathleen Middle School in north Lakeland, every person believes, from principal to students to janitors. That's one reason The Ledger has taken a step to support this turnaround school to help move it beyond its current status and get it off the list of schools that could be closed. We think all five turnaround schools in Polk County need community help and support, but we're starting with one.  With one success, we'll move on.

When we asked what one thing the school needed more than anything else, the answer was quick: a marquee, one that will highlight the school's achievements and events. Appearances mean a lot when you're trying to improve, and we think this is a great way to start.

When we asked whether the school had an estimate, the answer came just as fast: $11,900, complete with details on what that would buy. That alone shows the school is serious about this purchase.

When we started discussing what we could do to help Kathleen, we thought about iPads or some other technology. But the school has those resources. Moving beyond the classroom is where it needs help.

After touring the school, we believe that Kathleen Middle will be successful this school year, its sights set on a C or maybe even a low B. We support that. And we're willing to throw in $1,000 to this campaign (coming soon).

We hope you agree and will help Kathleen Middle School get what most schools take for granted -- a marquee. It serves the best we can offer, and we know all 700 or so students and employees will be forever grateful.
