The Siberian Indigenous Shor People

Donation protected
Help us bring forward the forgotten voices, the missing voices in today’s hectic material world—voices that speak, sing and drum in unison with the heartbeat of Mother Earth. The focus of this campaign by Olympic Mountain EarthWisdom Circle (OMEC) is to raise awareness and to seek the necessary funds to empower the voice of one such First Nations people—the Shor of the Siberian Mountains.

OMEC has dedicated this campaign to raising money and generating public awareness in an effort to preserve the legacy of the Siberian Shor by documenting and publishing traditional Shor heroic legends. This book includes not only important historical events, but also offers the reader a glimpse into the special worldview of the Shor, which is characterized by a close and spiritual connection with nature.

The Siberian Shor People number about 10,000. During the 20th century they have been decimated by repression, alcoholism and suicide. Their voices, like many others, are being quelled at near genocidal proportions. The Shor legacy might not be remembered if not for projects such as this.

Before the 20th century the Shor did not have a written language; therefore all information was transferred orally – from one person to the next. Storytellers and shamans were the keepers of the oral history, traditions and language of their people. Their history survived in the legends, the myths and the heroic story. For the Shor, earliest and most popular of these were the heroic legend/story, told through throat singing and the playing of the two-stringed musical instrument, the kay-komus.

Traditionally, the heroic stories were shared from late evening until morning. They protected their people from evil spirits, pleased the spirit of Taiga (Forest and Mountains), and supported the success of trade and hunting.

Your donation will fund a fully illustrated book documenting Shor history; their legends, which will be published with an explanation of their special features; and with an audio CD featuring the voice of the storyteller (kaychi)--which is the voice of indigenous history itself.

In this video Jennifer Castner speaks about the translation effort of the Shor's heroic legends.

This book project includes two legends, recorded by the last Shor storyteller, Vladimir Tannagashev. Both legends narrate the life and fight of the Shor heroes, who protected their land and people from aggressors and evil spirits.

The book will be illustrated by Luba Arbachakov, and has photographs including a portrait of the storyteller.

Please join us in providing these voices a platform to be heard around the world, and as they share with us their natural wisdom, we look to raise the energy of this generation for the benefit of future descendants.

Thank you for your generous donations. You are helping preserve the history and traditions of an ancient and Earth honoring people.
