An appeal to build Shri Mata Temple
First ever Shri Mata Hindu Temple in USA.

Om Hindu Organization of Winston Salem is a non-profit religious organization registered in 2009 in the state of North Carolina. The goals of our organization is to construct a traditional Shri Mata Hindu temple followingAgama Shastra and to impart religious, educational and cultural values of Hindu Dharma to our community and to our future generations.
Growing up in India, we all have seen, felt and enjoyed the Hindu traditions where temples were present everywhere. The rituals of visiting, praying and participating in temple activities enables one to develop their spiritual path and to engage with the community. It is our duty and responsibility as Hindu immigrants to create this legacy for our children who have not experienced what we experienced in India.
As a growing community, we see a strong need for a place of worship and celebrate our festivals in a traditional way. Our children need a Bala Vihar (Gurukul) to gain a strong foundation and exposure to our culture, tradition and literature, as well as to develop a sense of belonging, identity and strong bonding within the community.
As Hindu immigrants, we have the unique opportunity bestowed by the grace of God to be involved in building the Shri Mata Hindu Temple in Winston Salem, North Carolina. As a community, we are reaching out to all Hindu devotees who would like to be a part of this monumental event.
Building a temple is challenging. Here in Winston-Salem, there is a small Hindu community of about 500 families who are determined to make this happen for current and future generations. We have a strong group of donors who have contributed financially and volunteers who have given of their time . With the donations from the local Hindu community we were able to buy the land and begin construction.
The Sthapathi (architect) has drawn up the plans which have been approved by the city. Bhumi Pooja (ground breaking) and Vaastu Pooja have been performed. The sand and water brought in from holy sites of India was placed under the shrine’s foundation along with the likhita japa books (written names of the Almighty).
We have followed the plan of constructing the temple following Agama Shastra principles (Agama Shastra is a collection of ideas that lays down the rules for temple building, worship, rituals and spirituality). The temple is to be built in the Devi Panchayatana style with Sri Mata (Lalithambika, the mother of the world) as the principle deity. Panchayatana is the system of worship introduced by Sri Adi Shankara that consists of the worship of five deities – Sri Ganesha, Goddess Devi, Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu, Sri Surya. The proportions of the temple have been carefully laid out to this divine symmetry.
