Comic Book Club

Calling all superheroes to help continue our Comic Book Club.  Too often students who have no motivation, a tough home life, and low reading skills miss out on a great genre of literature because they have never been introduced to comic books. Comic books can hook even the most reluctant readers and help them to become readers for life.  Thinking back to my childhood, I would have loved to have had my own secret club when I was 9 and 10 years old and for it to have been all about comics, who wouldn’t want to join!  As an educator and now a literacy coach, I  have begun two different comic book clubs that meet before the start of school.  One group is specifically geared towards boys and the other group is geared towards girls.  Each member is specifically chosen. The members are those kids who seem disengaged in the classroom or have little or no support at home.  I am meeting once a week with each group for ten weeks. To have the greatest impact on the members of this club, I wanted to be able to send a new comic home with each student after we meet.  Currently with the funding that has been raised I have been able to do just that.  I have been working with a local comic book store to choose the best comics to meet the needs of the members who are coming to our  Comic Book Club.  During the time we spend together, members are learning about the parts of a comic, what makes a comic, what makes a hero, how we can be our own heroes, and most importantly just enjoying reading.  I want members to walk away from our club with a love for this genre, increased self-esteem, and confidence in themselves.  As I anticipated, members are so excited about our Comic Book Club that it is  no longer a secret and other students want to join.  Right now I do not have enough funding to bring on anymore students.   I am seeking the rest of the $1,200 dollars or more in funding to help branch out to more students.   I know that there are superheroes out there who could step up and help to sponsor our club.  Please help me continue the great work of our Comic Book Club.
