Sherrie's Stroke Recovery Fund

On Monday June 17th, at approximately 11 am, our mom had an acute ischemic stroke. She woke up and was completely disoriented and couldn't make sense of anything. She was trying to feed the cat and get dressed and realized that she didn't know how. "Everything was wrong" is how she described it. She was able to make it to the neighbors and they called an ambulance. She was taken to the hospital with no phone or purse, so they spent the day trying to figure out where she had family. She couldn’t remember anyone’s phone number. Somehow, she remembered my (Dawn) address. A police officer showed up at my house at 6:30 pm and informed me that she had been in the hospital all day by herself.

While we were very lucky that it didn't affect most of her muscles it did cause some neurological damage. She is suffering from depth perception changes, aphasia (can’t find her words), generalized confusion and memory loss.  She cannot be left alone and must have someone to care for her at all time. Since her stroke my sisters, myself and close friends have been with her 24/7, taking turns in shifts to make sure she isn't alone.

She was in the hospital for a couple of days and then released to her home on 06/19. Since she does not have insurance (she doesn't qualify for Medicaid or Medicare) they were not able to discharge her to an inpatient facility. She needs a lot of therapy (speech and otherwise) and medications that need to be bought, which will be all out of pocket. Money to make her house more user friendly is also needed.

On 06/20 she was taken by ambulance back to the hospital with symptoms of another stroke and a possible GI bleed. She will have a colonoscopy on 06/22 to check for a bleed and hopefully be released back home with even more medication.

Her sister is coming down from Tennessee to stay with her until she is capable of living on her own. We will need to set up the spare room with a bed and dresser (it is currently empty).

Medical bills are piling up and she cannot work. With limited funds we are asking for any and all help that friends, family and others are willing to give while we work on getting her approved for Disability.

We are extremely grateful for the help that we have received already and are overwhelmed with the prayers and love that are being sent our way. We will take any good thoughts and prayers you have that you want to send our way!
