Sheffield STIEL empowering refugees

Donation protected
STIEL want to be able to offer a comprehensive Interpreting and Translation service to the Sheffield City Region, working as a Social Enterprise within the area, offering to work with translators and interpreters from the international community, refugees & asylum seekers the wider BME groups to help them attain recognised qualifications within the interpreting/translation sector.

To enable social mobility for people from BME backgrounds and offer opportunities for Asylum Seekers and Refugees to learn how to utilise their skills of having a native language and a fluency in English to find meaningful employment and instill feelings of integration, belonging, social empowerment and self worth.

STIEL is a social enterprise idea born from a rather frustrating day at the Refugee Family Reunion Law Clinic .

Six clients, four languages and one interpreter, a scramble to find somebody to help, an interpreter who could speak two more languages we needed, but that left us with a problem, one client, no way to communicate.

A long story short is we called an interpreter in from out of area, our forth language covered and a bill for six hours work rather than two.

We discussed the frustrations of not having access to a bank of interpreters, more the point that the lack of coordination a central point for booking interpreters is lacking.

Here’s what we’re doing about it:

A staggering amount of money is spent on interpreting and translation using companies based outside the demographic area.

STIEL will build a reliable database of Interpreters and Translators to serve the need of the Sheffield City Region

STIEL will tender for services with the local NHS commissioners and the local authorities for a service contract to supply Interpreting and Translation services

We will speak with the universities, the colleges, engage the services of the international student body as well as the community of Asylum Seekers, Refugees, BME and Multi-lingual citizens of Sheffield

The profit will be kept in Sheffield City Region, spent in Sheffield City Region and support the people of  Sheffield City Region

STIEL intends, via the social enterprise arm of the business, return 51% of the Net Profit of the business back into the local community, offer educational programmes, access to further qualifications, and a sense of belonging
