Shaylea's Anuradhapura Physiotherapy Elective

I have been very fortunate enough to have the opportunity to undertake a 4 week physiotherapy placement in Anuradhpura, Sri Lanka.
As a third-year physiotherapy student, I am eager to take every opportunity I can to enhance my practice. I always look to expand my learning and when first hearing about Work the World I was inspired to get involved. While undertaking a physiotherapy placement in a third world county is likely to be challenging and a big step out my comfort zone, I am confident this will be an experience I can learn from to take forward to apply to my physiotherapy practice. This placement will also allow me to volunteer my skills and expertise when required. I will be learning to treat and help motivate patients towards recovery in order to make a positive impact in a hospital with limited resources.
During my physiotherapy placement, I will be spending my clinical time between different departments at the main Govern Referral and Teaching Hospital. These departments are very busy and include general medicine, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, general surgery, cardiology and neurology. I will also have the opportunity to travel to some of Anuradhpura’s rural areas to treat patients that cannot afford to travel to the hospital.
Undertaking a placement in a developing country like Sri Lanka, offers the valuable opportunity to care and treat a wider range of patients from different cultural and social backgrounds. I will learn to treat a variety of diseases that are uncommon in third world countries and experience the standard of treatment given with the challenge of limited resources and time restrictions.
I am also planning to organise fundraising events (look out for my pub quiz in Glasgow!) to help towards hospital supplies.
All the money I raise will go towards this trip and I would be so grateful if you could spare a moment to help donate towards my physiotherapy placement. This will help me raise enough funds to go and start this adventure!
